Mehmet Genç

4 Mayıs 1934’te Arhavi’de doğdu. 1953’te İstanbul’da Haydarpaşa Lisesinden, 1958’de A.Ü. Siyasal Bilgiler Fakültesi Maliye ve İktisat Bölümünden mezun oldu.1959’da Ankara vilayetinde maiyet memurluğu ve Şereflikoçhisar kazasında kaymakam vekilliği yaptı. 1960’ta İ.Ü. İktisat Fakültesinde Türk İktisat Tarihi Enstitüsüne asistan olarak girdi. 1965’ten 1982’ye kadar aynı Enstitü’de İktisat Tarihi Uzmanı olarak çalıştı. 1983’ten itibaren Marmara Üniversitesi Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi’nde Öğretim Görevlisi olarak İktisat Tarihi ve Tarih Metodolojisi dersleri verdi. 1985-1988 yıllarında TRT’de danışman olarak çalıştı ve aynı yıllarda TRT televizyonlarında çok sayıda kültür ve bilim sohbetleri yaptı. 1985-2002 yıllarında İ.Ü. Edebiyat Fakültesi Sosyoloji Bölümünde Yüksek Lisans ve Doktora sınıflarında Tarih ve Sosyal Bilimler konusunda dersler verdi. 1996’da İ.Ü. Edebiyat Fakültesi’nde Genel Sosyoloji ve Metedoloji dalında Doktora Şeref Diploması tevcih edildi. 1999’da emekliye ayrıldı. Halen İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi’nin Tarih Bölümünde ile İ.T.Ü. İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri Bölümünde Osmanlı İktisat Tarihi dersleri vermektedir.
1973’ten itibaren Osmanlı İktisat Tarihi alanında millî ve milletlerarası birçok seminer ve toplantıya katılmış ve çok sayıda tebliğ sunmuştur. Çeşitli dergilerde Türkçe, İngilizce, Fransızca ve Yunanca’da yayınlanmış birçok makalesi vardır.
Bu tebliğ ve makalelerin önemli bölümü bazı ilavelerle “Osmanlı İmparatorluğunda Devlet ve Ekonomi”, adı ile Ötüken Yayınevinden 2000 yılında kitap olarak yayınlanmıştır.
Kitap, yayınlandığı yıl içinde Türkiye Yazarlar Birliği tarafından Fikir Dalında ödüle layık görülmüştür. Yazarın Türkiye İktisat Tarihi alanındaki katkıları hakkında Doğu-Batı dergisinin 12. Sayısında (Ağustos-Ekim 2000) Dr. Erol Özvar’ın “Belgeden Modele Uzanan Portre” başlıklı uzun bir tahlili yayınlanmıştır.
