Fatih Mehmet Kaya, lives in Turkey
No, no and no. The “Ottoman” Empire is rather a false and made-up name. Just like the usage of the term “Byzantine” Empire for the Eastern Roman Empire.
Most Europeans already called the Empire as the Turkish Empire or sometimes simply Turkey throughout its existence. After the republic was established in Turkey, historians used that term more often to describe the Imperial period of Turkey. But then again, it is still false. We do not generally use “the Habsburg Empire” for the Austrian Empire. The same applies here. Ottoman is only the name of the dynasty rather than the Empire.
On the other hand Turks simply referred their empire as “Devlet-i Aliye” (The Sublime State)
“The Turkish Empire” - a 1626 map
“Türkisches Reich” in German
a British historical map dated between 1877–1912 referring to the Rumelian part of the Turkish Empire as “Turkey”
EDIT/Thanks. Thank you all those upvotes, translations to other Quora languages and comments. Here is an animated video featuring Janissaries and scenes from the Turkish Empire period with the beautiful music Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca (the Turkish March)
